The Doomsman

The Doomsman is a nickname I have made up for the guys who say 'He's getting married?! Poor guy!' I have to say, I am unimpressed with the 'poor guy, he's getting married!' quote, which is beginning to be a catch-phrase and I personally don't think should be so popular!

Example:
Groom: Hey guys! I just wanted to tell you before this became Facebook official! I'm getting married!
Doomsman: 'Poor guy! Drink up mate and congratulations!"
(Cue male chuckling and the enthusiastic clash of pints).

Why 'poor him'?
Is he sad about the engagement? Is his life really over? Because women who are loyal to their man and dutifully pull their weight deserve the respect due to them.
As for that 'poor guy', he is pretty damn lucky to have somebody like that who loves him and has agreed to be his wife. If anything, deciding to enter the marriage state is brave because it means everything you do, good and bad, affects somebody else and it's not something for you to snigger at and mock!

To us women, it makes us wonder whether you think we are worth the effort for you to pledge your love, to protect and be with us for better or worse as long we live.
When you say stuff like 'poor guy, he's getting married!' you are not just insulting the bride-to-be, but all womankind and if you still think that is funny, try picture telling your friends "Hey! My mother/sister/friend is getting married!" To that your buddies chuckle and say 'Poor guy! He's DOOMED!'
Imagine how you would feel listening to that! It is exactly what women are feeling when they hear that line and apart from hurt and humiliation, they are thinking. "What a jerk!"
It doesn't sound so funny now, does it?

So gents!
Please be that guy who is respectful and congratulates his friend on being so certain of a woman that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her.
And while your at it, send a girly drink in the direction of the Doomsman!
