Dreaming Magic

"In dreams, we enter a world that is entirely our own." - Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Askaban.

Your magic is working 24/7, even when you are sleeping because magic can happen everywhere, especially in our dreams. The unlikely and unthinkable becomes possible, we can see people we don't speak to anymore and we can have a treasured moment with a loved one who is in heaven.
We can escape to the past or what we hope to be our future.
Our dreams are like movies that we are drawn into, full of adventure, fun, truth and warnings which challenge us in turn to be aware, mindful and courageous.
Our dreams can show us things we cannot see when we are awake.

Last year I fell asleep, I dreamt that I was weightless and flew out of my bedroom window before a quick descent. I woke up just before I hit the ground. (Sadly, I had no broom - so it wasn't a Harry Potter dream!) But I woke up feeling light, liberated and excited. My phone vibrated and it was a text from Alan saying I had received a big envelope in the mail-box. I dashed downstairs and pulled it out of the mail-box, it was from a publisher I had been waiting on.
I opened the letter and burst into tears, my big moment had come! This publisher wanted my book!
My spirits soared, then deflated when I read how much it would cost. I still had hope that it could work and was tempted to sign on the dotted line. But I was urged by various people to look into the reputation of the company - sadly I found alot of red flags which made my blood turn cold.

Flying. Falling. Waking up before I hit the ground.

I never really thought of the dream like that before this morning. Looking back now, it seemed to be a warning. As I was on my way to work and a favorite Bible story of mine came to mind.

Genesis 37 in the Bible tells us the unhappy story of a young man called Joseph, who was the known favorite of his father Jacob and one of twelve brothers.
Joseph had a gift of translating dreams and he loved to share this gift with others. He dreamt of one bale of hay standing tall and eleven bales bowed towards it in a circle.

'Others' included his jealous older brothers who scorned him and his gift, when Jacob made Joseph a beautiful coat of many colours, their scorn turned to blind hatred and at the first opportunity, they sought to kill him by throwing him in a pit with the intention of leaving him to die from the wiltering sun, thirst and hunger. But one of Joseph's other brothers, Rueben, saw another opportunity to be rid of Joseph for good but also would fatten their pockets. They sold him to a caravan of merchants for twenty pieces of silver.

Years went by and during that time Joseph made a name for himself in the house of a wealthy and powerful man called Potiphar. As he was young and handsome, Potiphar's wife made moves on him and although he was innocent; was thrown in jail to rot when Potiphar's wife told her husband that Joseph had made advances on her. During his time in prison, he met a baker and a butler who had been sent to jail. They had dreams which Joseph interpreted accurately and three days later, they were pardoned.

These men was acquitted, re-instated and two years later they remembered Joseph.
The Pharoh of that time had a dream which plagued his mind night and day and remembering Joseph advised the Pharoh to allow Joseph tell him what his dreams meant.

Later when Joseph's translation and prophesy proved to be true - the Pharoh put Joseph in charge of harvesting and rations for the seven years of famine while the kingdom enjoyed seven years of prosperity.
During the seven years of famine, Joseph's brothers came to see him - the very ones who had mocked, scorned and sold him out.
In the end, Joseph's earlier dream from years ago came true - the bales of hay that bowed to the one in the middle had represented each of his brother's and that is why they resented him.
Not only was Joseph extraordinarily gifted and their father's favorite, but he was also destined to become a man of great influence and power.

So the morals of this story is this.

  • All of us are dreamers and in our hearts we know what is at the core of our dreams.
  •  All of us have special gifts to offer the world.
  • God created us in his image and gave us our very own magic to use in our waking moments, to bring healing, joy and colour to others.
  • We have no cause to be jealous of what someone else can do that we cannot, because we can do the things that they cannot.
  • When haters aim to throw you down or sell you out, they cannot escape the natural consequences of their actions.
  • Each season, whether a short or long duration teaches us new lessons or skills so that when life comes full circle, we are ready to let go of what was and embrace what will be, or could be - if we stay kind and humble and use our gifts to help others.
  • If we use our gifts with love and vision, they can help set us free.
  • Even when you are surrounded by people who will not understand or think well of you, use your magic to live your life in a way that you will celebrate.

And so, my loves.
Dream your dreams and if you have a gut feeling or a knowing about a dream, listen.
